11/8/2016 - Orange Emus will wind back the clock with retro jumpers

ORANGE Emus will be winding back the clock on Saturday at Endeavour Oval.

The club’s Blowes Clothing Cup first grade squad will be wearing retro jerseys for the huge, top-of-the-table clash with Forbes Platypi, donning bottle green jumpers most recently worn in the late 1990s.

The jerseys are set to be auctioned off post game, Emus old boy Matt Greatbatch said the funds from the auction will go towards helping the club bolster junior numbers.

“Obviously we don’t have a 17s or a colts side,” Greatbatch said.

He added the club is strong in its infant grades, with multiple wallas sides in the under-7s, under-9s and under-11s, while also fielding competitive teams in the under-13 and under-15 age groups in the 2016 season.

“And with guys like Clappy, Gooly, young Lachie Harris, the McLeans … all of the boys have come through the grades here at Emus, and if we don’t do something to restock the juniors they’ll be it.

“The jerseys have been donated by our old boys’ club and the money raised will go towards helped with fees for juniors, that sort of thing.

“We’ll get in early, get some coaches and get on the front foot for next year.”

The timing of the retro round at Endeavour Oval couldn’t be better for the club.

Emus and Forbes have been the two best sides throughout the 2016 Blowes Clothing Cup first grade premiership, with Saturday’s penultimate round hit-out a mouth-watering prelude to what is shaping up as a gripping finals series.

Currently 10 points clear at the top of the ladder with just two games to go before the semis start, Emus (71 points) need just a bonus point to wrap up the minor premiership over Saturday’s opposition Forbes (61 points).

Greatbatch was looking forward to the game against the Platypi, an outfit the Emus club has a long history of tough clashes with having played grand finals against Forbes in the early 2000s.

“It’s always a great day with Forbes,” Greatbatch said.

“We tend to do these jersey auctions when Forbes is in town because they always support us and bid for a few jumpers as well.

“They do the same thing when we’re in Forbes too. The sun will be out, we’re expecting a good day.”

Emus take on Forbes from 3.15pm on Saturday at Endeavour Oval.

The club will auction off the one-off retro jerseys after the first grade speeches at the Emus clubhouse.
