Selection Policy

EMUS RUFC SELECTION POLICY

Introduction

Emus RUFC is committed to the development of its players and maximising opportunities for on field success. A primary focus of the Club is to develop Junior players and have them go on to play Grade for the Club. The Club does not want to retard the development of Junior players by selecting them for a standard of play for which they are not physically and mentally prepared. The Club does not wish a culture of “closed shops” to exist whereby Grade players make themselves available only for a particular grade. This policy is aimed to ensure that all players and coaches are aware of the club’s attitude to selection of teams

Colts Players

Selection in the starting side for First Grade side is the pinnacle of the club and as such all Grade and Colts players are encouraged to be available for selection in the First Grade side. Not all Colts players will be physically and mentally prepared to start in First Grade despite being equipped with sufficient skill and accordingly the selection of Colts players in starting side for First Grade is entirely at the discretion of the First Grade selection group (usually consisting of the First Grade coach and others.)

The order of priority for selection of Colts players in starting sides is:

• First Grade.
• Colts
• Second Grade
• Third Grade

In the event that Colts do not have a game on any weekend that Grade teams have games the order of priority for selection of Colts players in starting sides is:

• First grade
• Second Grade
• Third Grade

In the event that Colts have reserves then those reserves may be selected in the starting side for Second Grade or Third Grade subject to a determination by the First Grade selection group that the player is prepared for that selection.

Open Selection for Grade teams

Selection for Grade teams is to be on merit and is to be open. All players eligible to play Grade, i.e. non Colts players are strongly encouraged to play in the team in which they are selected each week. The Club discourages any player from nominating themselves as available only for a particular team and particularly discourages groups of players from forming a group and nominating that group as available only for selection in a particular team.

Any player who is dissatisfied with the team in which he has been selected for any given week is to communicate directly with the coach of the team in which he has been selected and the team in which he believes he should be selected so that any grievance can be openly and honestly resolved.

The Club acknowledges and accepts that there will be situations of older players who wish only to play a certain Grade, usually Third Grade. The Club does not wish to set any particular criteria to dictate when a player might be considered in the “special” category that permits him to nominate his team because the situation will usually be obvious and one of common sense.
